A Very Groovy Christmas

Here are some tunes and clips to warm your Christmas spirit up, and remember that this is a festivity about presents and trees, not guys walking on water. And, by the way, remember that Child’s Play is on!

A Colbert Christmas – The Greatest Gift of All

The best parodies are homages, and this vitriolic walk into Christmas’ specials cliches is a great Christmas Special itself. Try and watch the show any way you can: the music is up on Itunes, and works great on its own. It’s also just one more confirmation that Elvis Costello is a genius.

Wishing You a Rave Christmas – The Raveonettes

The Raveonettes had a great year: Lust Lust Lust is one of the best albums relased in 2008, and this EP is full of fuzz and Christmas’ Spirit

Christmas Time – The Smashing Pumpkins

A rare Pumpkins track that could have worked in Pisces Iscariot. A sweet ballad filled with nostalgia.

Anorak Christmas – Sally Shapiro

For some obscure Italo Disco is very big in Scandinavia. Sally Shapiro is a Swedish singer whose Disco Romance is a perfect compilation of icy, sleek pop tunes. Close you eyes while listening to this song and you will see disco ball covered by snow. I swear.

She Came Home From Christmas – Mew

And it’s Scandinavia, again. Another Danish band, like the Raveonettes, but one with a more grandiose, sweeping approach to music.

Everything is Gonna be Cool This Christmas – Eels

Mark E. Smith is a genius, and the only person in the world that can make the line “Baby Jesus – born to rock” work without any effort.

The Flaming Lips are all that Christmas should be and their shows are a gigantic, spectacular tribute to joy. Their movie is finally out, and it’s the best way to celebrate the holidays this year.
