But luckily, there was the odd stroke of genius. “Musica”, bundled with Repubblica each wednesday for most of the 90’s, had solid reviews and could often look out of the box. And when it reviewed Voodoo, in one of the most glowing reviews I’ve ever read, I know I had to get it. Something in the review was telling me I had to have it. Then I saw the “Untitled” video on MTV. I never saw anything like it, but most importantly, I rarely heard anything with that kind of intensity.

I got the record in a shop I never used to go to, right in the center of Cagliari, one saturday after school. I never heard of D’Angelo,  I remember being puzzled reading the liner notes, a fascinating and confusing stream of consciousness, and being surprised to see such reverence for Prince, an artist I never really listened to. I also liked the tribal feel of the packaging. Soul and Hip Hop were going for a sleek, clean feel. I could tell that this one was trying to change things, to make a statement. Once I put the CD in the player, and my mind was blown. I never listened to anything like it before. The whole record SWEATS in you ears. When anyone talks about “organic” sound, that’s always the first record I think of. The performance are all amazingly groovy. It’ almost hyperreal: it feels like the musicians wanted the record to sound like a living being. It’s one of the few record that I still can’t remember by heart even after listening to it close to a hundred times. Its beats and its grooves go right into your skin and they stay there, never blowing in your face, going deeper each time you listen to the songs. After listening to the album, the liner notes and the overall style of the packaging started to make a lot more sense. D’Angelo and the musicians working for him wanted to get back to the roots by recapturing the intentions that made soul great while still looking forward.

This was the record that made me really appreciate soul music. I grew up listening to Michael Jackson, and I was always fascinated by r’n'b and the Motown sound, but this was the first time someone taking that seriously. It’s still one of my all time favorite records. Voodoo is timeless. It was way ahead of the time, and it can’t quite age. It’s a celebration of human rhythm, of joy and life. I am now a big Prince fan, I consider him a genius and an amazing musician. Still, I’m not sure he ever recorded a record as good as this. 10 Years from the release of Voodoo, I just hope to get to experience a new D’Angelo record once again. Soon.

The fascinating presentation for Google Wave has been watched by millions of people in  just a few weeks. It’s  an hour and a half long video, a whirlwind of ideas and possibilities that paves the way to a new way to work and network. It’s exciting and compelling, even though it only shows  just two people typing and editing text. Not the exactly what should make for a great video.

Video and audio are more effective that the written word, more direct and suggestive. It’s easier to manipulate people through these means, and many people are thinking that, as time goes by, writing will become less and less important . In a very interesting indie movie released last year, Sleep Dealer, one of the characters wants to become a writer, and sells her blog posts. But her “writing” consists in recording her voice while a device captures the images in her brain, converting them to video. It seems perfectly natural: writing images and writing words is not that different. One can hardly think that the most important moments in our future history will be shared with the written word.

But most of our communication is still happening via text, especially when it comes to work and building projects. Text has a lot of advantages when it comes to put down ideas. Reading is not linear: we can go back and forth from paragraph to paragraph in instants, ordering our ideas at will. We can tackle issues and complex systems while keeping an eye on the big picture. Pictures, videos and sound can help with that, but the spine of any creative and productive work flow is still text.

Google Wave is like a turbo engine for the written word. It enhances the unique possibilities of writing and reading to a new level, with a special focus on the possibilities of editing. It gives the chance to make changes in real time, giving an instant view on the impact of these changes to multiple people. This can’t be done with the same clarity even when working in the same room with people: spoken words fades constantly, and concept evolve in a linear wave.

This is the appeal of the Google Wave video. Seeing the documents in the presentation growing in all directions, from the center to the concept to its end, is a incredible testament of the reason why writing and editing words is such a powerful tool. It’s almost as if it makes editing as fluid and organic as making music.

Also, wave makes ever more clear that content is king. Form can be corrected by the program, form is tech. But ideas will stay, and will be shared and will grow in a group. Again, something much harder to track in words, and too cumbersome and slow to work out with video. And as a non native english speaker living in an international, the possibilities of real time translation from multiple languages can be a real revolution in the way we communicate. A real Babelfish, another tool only suited to written words, at least for now.

It’s hard to tell what this will mean for the future of writing, but I have the feeling that this can put the spotlight back to substance. The system uses the immediate feedback of IM, chats and blogging in a way that seems to celebrate the permanence of words. Blogging is a great tool, but it makes for a writing style that privileges immediacy to depth, and uses linking and commenting to make a community reach powerful, collective ideas in a disjointed process that leaves no space to polished, effective products that can be shared with people not involved in these small communities. But people working in a wave can make their primary goal to work together in editing and thinking as a group for something that can transcend the process itself: the final product of each wave should be one strong product of multiple minds. It feels like an architectural tool rather than a writing one.

It will be interesting to see this system grow with the rise of e-reader like Kindle. The combination of the two systems can give a new boost to writing. And maybe even prove Steve Jobs wrong when he says that reading is dead.

Essere professionisti e l’alba dei dilettanti

E’ un piacere parlarvi, stanotte. Negli ultimi due giorni ho visitato molte classi, ho parlato di sceneggiatura e film, ho parlato di me stesso. Lo so fare bene. Ma quando ho accettato di partecipare a questa conferenza, uno dei requisiti richiedeva che la presentazione avesse un titolo. Quindi un argomento, una tesi, un senso.

E’ tutto molto accademico, e mi piace. Mi mancava. Non mi crederete, ma un giorno ripenserete alla vostra carriera universitaria e sarete presi dalla nostalgia. Perché c’è qualcosa di rassicurante nel dover scrivere un saggio di quindici pagine sull’uso delle immagini floreali in “Orgoglio e Pregiudizio”.

La cosa più bella è che se sbagliate non succede nulla. Per il resto della vostra vita, vi diranno che state cazzeggiando. Quando siete in università, vi danno un voto.

Ma andando avanti.

Ho deciso di non concentrare questa conferenza sulla sceneggiatura in senso stretto, ma sulla scrittura in generale. Perché in questa sala siamo tutti scrittori. Che scriviate sceneggiature, o saggi di ricerca, o quantomeno e-mail. Tutti voi siete, e sarete, scrittori professionisti in qualche ambito.

Voglio parlare di cosa questo significhi.

Ma prima parliamo di me.

Il 21 marzo del 2004, più o meno alle nove del mattino, ho ricevuto un’e-mail dal mio amico James, con scritto: “Congratulazioni per l’ottima recensione di Charlie e la Fabbrica di Cioccolato su Ain’t it Cool News”!

Questo mi ha inquietato per più di una ragione.

Prima di tutto, il film non era stato ancora girato. Non avevamo neanche cominciato con la produzione. Di conseguenza, la recensione doveva essere basata sulla sceneggiatura. Gli studio e i cineasti non sono per nulla contenti quando le sceneggiature vengono diffuse e recensite su internet, perché fanno partire un meccanismo di congetture e speculazioni su cose che potrebbero o meno essere girate. Sapevo che avrei ricevuto telefonate di panico dalla Warner Bros.

Ma prima dovevo leggere il pezzo su Aint’ It Cool News. Immagino che tutti qui conosciate Aint’ It Cool News. E’ un sito internet gestito dal ciccione con i capelli rossi dove parlano dei film in arrivo e su come tutti facciano schifo. Dopo ogni articolo i lettori scrivono i loro commenti, che di solito sono deliri incomprensibili su Hulk Hogan. Questo è Aint’ It Cool News.

Quindi ho aperto il sito e ho cominciato a leggere. Leggerò solo qualche passaggio del pezzo, è molto lungo. E non è stato scritto da uno dei redattori del sito, ma da un tizio che si fa chiamare Michael Marker.

Cari lettori, non sono parte della produzione, sono solo un ragazzo fortunato con un genitore che lavora nel mondo del cinema. Con il quasi-pemesso di mio padre, un amore assoluto per Roald Dahl, e un rispetto ancora maggiore di prima per John August, scrivo qualche pensiero sul suo adattamento di Charlie e la Fabbrica di Cioccolato di Dahl.

Già adesso sono nervoso. Ma “rispetto ancora maggiore” suona bene, chissà come va a finire?

Vi avverto che rivelerò aspetti importanti della trama. La sceneggiatura è tutta lì. Tantissimi dettagli sono intrecciati alla trama e ai temi della storia come il rosso in un bastoncino di zucchero – è energizzante e vitalizzante.

Ok, lo stile è un po’ troppo arzigogolato, ma andiamo avanti.

Come nell’adattamento di Peter Pan curato da P.J. Hogan, August non perde mai di vista gli aspetti più importanti del testo di Dahl, non solo sottolineando le parti fondamentali della trama e dei personaggi, ma riproducendo la visione di Dahl con straordinaria inventività.

Sono un grande.

August ha scelto di cambiare lo sfondo della storia: da una cittadina in stile inglese a la Oliver Twist mischiata con uno show a premi degli anni ’60, è passato ad con un misto tra Hershey in Pennsylvania con Detroit/Pittsburgh/Chicago/Periferia. Negozi in stile Wallgreen vedono le barrette Wonka, e la madre di Charlie lavora in una fabbrica di scarpe da tennis. August rischia di essere accusato di americanizzare troppo la storia per scioccare il pubblico. Dahl ne sarebbe fiero.

A questo punto comincio ad essere perplesso. “Perplesso” è probabilmente il termine sbagliato, perché si riferisce ad una reazione intellettuale, mentre quello che provavo era fisico. Il tipo di nausea che si prova quando si cade. Perché il problema è che non ho ambientato la storia ad Hershey, PA. La mamma di Charlie non lavora in una fabbrica di scarpe da tennis. Per nulla. Ma continuo a leggere.

L’entrata di Wonka: la classica caduta con bastone, naturalmente. Fino a che un vecchio nella folla non rovina il divertimento. “Impostore!” urla. L’uomo tira fuori un telecomando e immobilizza Wonka con un click. L’uomo si toglie la sua stessa faccia e VIOLA!

C’è scritto proprio “viola!” Ma son sicuro che lo scrittore intendesse “Voila!”

Il vero Wonka si rivela. Arrotola la faccia di plastica dentro una palla e ne morde un pezzo come se fosse carne secca. Preme un bottone sul telecomando e il Wonkarobot si inchina.

Questo non è neanche lontanamente quello che succede nella sceneggiatura. La nostra versione ha una parodia/omaggio di “E’ Un Mondo Piccolo” dove i burattini prendono fuoco e si sciolgono. Quindi mi fermo e penso: “che diavolo sto leggendo?” Che questo tizio abbia trovato una copia di una vecchia sceneggiatura di Charlie senza il nome dell’autore, e dato per scontato che fosse la mia? O sta mentendo deliberatamente? In ogni caso, la nausea sta lasciando posto a tremori.

Ma continuo a leggere.

Un tocco di classe: le porte nella casa dei Bucket e nella Fabbrica di Cioccolato non si chiudono mai del tutto. Nella casa è un’abitudine degli abitanti, nella fabbrica è un soffio meccanico che blocca le porte al 99% della chiusura.

Non ho idea di quello di cui parla. Non so neanche cosa significhi.

Per quanto sia parsimonioso con le descrizioni visuali, ogni frase di August si scorre come l’olio: “mostra le tue mani e le tua braccia figliolo, non voglio segreti in questa casa”, “un altro cane abbaia nella distanza, un cane scuro, seducente”.

Se riesco a descrivere un cane seducente, devo essere uno scrittore straordinario.

E arriviamo agli Oompa Loompa.

Wonka spiega la loro storia con un tono inquietante, come la lettera di Thomas Jefferson a Tom Hart, un altro proprietario di schiavi, nel 1806. “Il negro è stato trapiantato dalla Giungla Mortale dei Conflitti Tribali e dai demoni della Malattia e la Fame, ma è successo contro la sua volontà. Qualcuno potrebbe dire che sia un’opera di benevolenza da parte dell’uomo bianco. Io credo che sia il modo in cui vanno le cose”.

Thomas Jefferson? La benevolenza dell’uomo bianco? Per mettere le cose in chiaro, questo è un film su un biglietto d’oro e una magica fabbrica di cioccolato. Abbiamo cercato di evitare le ramificazioni socio politiche dell’imperialismo occidentale. L’articolo è firmato: “un affettuoso lavoro di finzione di Michael Marker”.

Questo tizio sta dicendo che ha inventato tutto di sana pianta, ma è tutto online, presentato come se fosse vero. Questa recensione è largamente positiva, ma completamente sbagliata.

Quindi, che faccio?

Fortunatamente conosco una persona che lavora ad Aint’ It Cool News. Il suo nome è Jeremy, ma nel sito si firma “Mr. Beaks”. Ho pranzato con lui un paio di volte per parlare di Big Fish e Tarzan. Quindi gli mando una mail e scrivo che, hey, la recensione di Charlie è una bufala.

Per essere precisi, gli scrivo “questo tizio vi ha propinato una bufala”. Non è che mi sia offeso. E’ che quel tizio, Michael Marker, sta infangando il nome di Aint’ It Cool News cercando di far passare I suoi deliri per verità. Come si permette!

E funziona. Mr. Beaks parla con Harry, e Harry pubblica un nuovo articolo che dice che la recensione è un falso. Non tolgono l’articolo originale, ma abbiamo praticamente risolto.

Ma non posso fare a meno che pensare… il suo articolo era sbagliato, ma era molto, molto positivo. Cosa sarebbe successo se fosse stato negativo? Mr. Beaks e Harry Knowles mi avrebbero creduto lo stesso? Probabilmente no. Avrebbero detto “oh, sta rosicando”. Lamentarmi avrebbe dato ancora più credibilità alla falsa recensione.

Vedete, il problema è che se provate ad andare contro ad Aint’ It Cool News, o un altro dei siti che si occupano di film, e li criticate per aver pubblicato qualcosa come una recensione di una proiezione di prova o di inventarsi qualcosa di sana pianta, riceverete sempre la stessa risposta:

Hey, non siamo giornalisti professionisti. Siamo solo un gruppo di appassionati di film.

E torniamo all’argomento di questa conferenza: professionisti contro dilettanti.

Che significato hanno queste parole, oggi?

La distinzione classica e facile è che il professionista viene pagato per quello che fa, l’appassionato no. In molti campi, questa discriminante funziona. Ci sono i pugili professionisti e quelli dilettanti. C’è un astronomo professionista e l’appassionato di astronomia, un tizio con un telescopio nel cortile.

Un mio amico ha provato a distinguere usando il criterio per cui “l’appassionato fa qualcosa per passione”. Che è un po’ deprimente se ci pensate. Come se dal momento in cui qualcuno comincia a pagarti per quello che fai smettessi di esserne appassionato.

Magari ha senso per la prostituzione, ma non credo sia un criterio universale.

Ad esempio, oggi io ho lo stesso rapporto con la sceneggiatura che avevo quando ho cominciato, quando dormivo sul pavimento e mangiavo linguine di ramen. In pratica: odio abbastanza scrivere, ma adoro aver scritto. Farei praticamente qualunque cosa piuttosto che sedermi a scrivere una scena. Ma una volta che l’ho scritta, rileggerla è puro piacere.

E sinceramente la teoria del “venire pagato per farlo” non regge molto una volta analizzata. Un appassionato di fotografia può scattare una foto e venire pubblicato su Newsweek. Non per questo è un professionista. Un blogger può vendere Google Ad sul suo sito per qualche penny a click. Ma non è questo che lo fa diventare un professionista, almeno nel senso in cui credo dovremmo usare questo termine.

Da qui la mia prima tesi di stasera:

Essere “Professionista” non ha nulla a che vedere con l’essere pagati.

Quando parliamo di “professionisti”, credo che il vero argomento sia la “professionalità”, ovvero l’insieme di aspettative su come una persona dovrebbe comportarsi. Cercherò di mettere in fila quelle che credo siano queste caratteristiche.

La prima è “presentazione”.

Di solito questo lo chiamavo “fottersene”, ma sto usando troppe parolacce per un discorso accademico.

Cosa intendo per presentazione: diciamo che state scrivendo una lettera di lavoro, ed è piena di errori di battitura e grammatica. Questo non è professionale.

O magari siete il direttore di un’agenzia funebre, e vi sedete accanto alla famiglia del deceduto indossando una maglietta dei Ramones. Pure questo non è professionale.

Quello che sto dicendo è che c’è una certa aspettativa sul modo in cui un professionista si presenta, che sia di persona o tramite la scrittura. L’obiettivo è quello di fare in modo che il pubblico vi veda nella luce migliore possibile, il che significa correggere quello che si è scritto e indossare una maglietta pulita.

Essere professionista vuol dire presentarsi come un professionista.

La seconda caratteristica dell’essere professionale è l’accuratezza.

Se sei un ragioniere e metti fuori posto un decimale, non è professionale. Se sei un chirurgo e tagli il braccio sbagliato, quello è sbagliato e poco professionale. E agghiacciante.

La terza caratteristica è la consistenza.

Facciamo che state andando in un ristorante, e sapete che cucinano ottimo cibo messicano. La volta dopo vi servono solo cibo ungherese. Ci tornate una terza volta?

La consistenza è parte dell’essere professionista. E’ produrre quello che la gente si aspetta, ogni volta.

E chiaramente bisogna essere puntuali. Se l’unica cosa in cui siete consistenti è arrivare in ritardo, non è professionale.

Prossimo: responsabilità.

Questo significa che alla domanda “chi ha fatto questo?” voi possiate alzare la mano e dire “l’ho fatto io”. Sono stato responsabile. In un certo senso la responsabilità è l’opposto dell’anonimato. E’ il motivo per cui vedete le firme alla fine degli articoli di giornale.

L’ultima caratteristica della professionalità, o almeno l’ultima che mi viene in mente, è “raggiungere gli standard della professione”.

Questo significa che all’interno della categoria delle persone che fanno quello che fate si è d’accordo su cosa sia e non sia accettabile. A volte questo è scritto su carta, come nel caso delle grosse agenzie immobiliari, o degli avvocati e i loro ordini. Spesso questo accordo è meno formale, ma non vuol dire che non esista. Che siano i camerieri che condividono le mance con i ragazzi che cambiano i servizi da tavola, o gli studenti che si scambiano gli appunti prima dei test, c’è un accordo piuttosto chiaro su cosa vada bene o meno. E soprattutto ci sono conseguenze se queste aspettative non sono raggiunte.

Riassumo gli elementi della mia definizione di Professionista.

• Presentazione (o fottersene)
• Accuratezza
• Consistenza
• Responsabilità
• Standard Professionali

Non esce un buon acronimo, ci ho provato. Ma credo che questi cinque elementi siano dietro ad ogni discussione sull’uso della parola “professionale”. Che ci porta alla…

Seconda tesi:

Gran parte dei media “professionali” è straordinariamente poco professionale.

Questo può sembrare piuttosto ovvio, ma non per questo è meno deprimente. Ho qui due riviste che ho comprato in aeroporto mentre venivo qui.

La prima è Us Weekly. La seconda è OK Weekly. Potete notare che in entrambi c’è un articolo su una certa coppia di celebrità.

Chiaramente spendo le notti senza dormire, preoccupato per il matrimonio di Tom e Katie. Per tornare a me, così sto a più agio, conosco Katie Holmes dai tempi di Go. La adoravo. Per un bel po’ di tempo la chiamavo per il suo compleanno. Ma poi mi son reso contro che una diciannovenne e un omosessuale piuttosto più vecchio non possono avere granché in comune.

Ma dio li benedica. Loro lo stan facendo funzionare.

O almeno, speriamo. E’ difficile da prevedere. Se ripensate a Nick e Jessica (lo so, il cuore si spezza), una settimana era colpa di lui, quella dopo era colpa di lei. E sembrava che i giornalisti scrivessero i pezzi in entrambi i modi per poter pubblicare la versione più adatta alle foto di quella settimana.

Responsabilità: Come facciamo a sapere che ci sono problemi in paradiso?

“Secondo le nostre fonti”. Ok. Le Fonti. Perché faccio fatica a credere queste fonti? Magari è perché le fonti che loro citano per nome non hanno nulla a che vedere con Tom e Katie, e stanno chiaramente congetturando.

Questo è un trend pericoloso, perché è facile trovare qualcuno che ti dica più o meno qualunque cosa. Bisogna stare particolarmente attenti a termini come “cane da guardia dei media” o “osservatore di celebrità”. Non siamo tutti osservatori di celebrità? Ho comprato queste riviste. Sono un osservatore delle celebrità.

Standard professionali: mi sto concentrando su due riviste. Tutte le riviste sono uguali? Sinceramente, no. Mi pare che Time Magazine e Newsweek abbiano generalmente standard più alti, specialmente quando si occupano di “notizie che contano” piuttosto che di intrattenimento.

“Giornalismo sull’intrattenimento” è uno di quei termini che diventa più inquietante più ci si pensa. Per me è come quell’illusione ottica dove la stessa immagine si può interpretare come un vaso o due donne che si guardano. E’ giornalismo sull’intrattenimento, o giornalismo che intrattiene?

Questo è un argomento per un altro seminario. Ma credo sia ovvio che non ha senso mettere Entertainment Tonight o Access Hollywood sullo stesso piano di 60 Minutes. Una volta che vediamo che “questo è uno show sulle celebrità” diamo per scontato che molto di quello che stiamo per vedere sarà costruito. Piuttosto diventa goffo e strano quando una giornalista seria come Diane Sawyer segue Brad Pitt in Africa per parlare della fame nel mondo. Non è una storia da telegiornale; non è una notizia. E credo che renda più complesso prendere sul serio Diane Sawyer quando presenta notizie reali.

Una delle cose che non è chiara a chi vive e lavora al di fuori dell’industria dell’intrattenimento è che Hollywood è una città molto piccola. Tutti si chiamano per nome, anche se non si conoscono. E abbiamo due giornali locali: Variety e l’Hollywood Reporter.

Se lavorate nell’industria vi abbonate ad entrambi, e li ricevete ogni mattina. Variety è famoso per il suo linguaggio da addetti ai lavori, che lo rende quasi illeggibile. Lo chiamano Slanguage (Slang + Language, ndt). Le premiere sono chiamate preems. I presidenti prexys. E nessuno lascia un lavoro, ma “caviglia” (ankle, ndt). La loro testata più celebre è del 1935: “Sticks Nix Hicks Pix”.

Il che voleva dire che la gente del Midwest non stava andando a vedere I film sui contadini.

L’Hollywood Reporter, d’altro canto, è scritto in Inglese.

Entrambi I giornali hanno un sito internet, dove potete leggere la maggior parte degli stessi articoli che trovate sul giornale. L’Hollywood Reporter ha anche un blog, scritto dal suo vice direttore, Anne Thompson. Il blog non ha pezzi veri e propri, ma piuttosto piccoli commenti, paragrafi. Insomma, è un blog.

Più o meno una settimana fa, ho letto sul blog una cosa che mi ha messo piuttosto a disagio.

Ora, se avete prestato attenzione all’inizio della mia conferenza-monologo, vi ricorderete che ho qualche problema con le recensioni delle sceneggiature. Non credo siano una buona cosa. Per me, è come decidere che è un bambino è brutto guardando un’ecografia.

Ero scioccato per la recensione della sceneggiatura di Charlie su Aint’ It Cool News, e quella era una recensione falsa. Adesso il vice direttore dell’Hollywood Reporter mette un link alla una recensione di una sceneggiatura. Pensavo non fosse corretto. Per cui l’ho chiamata.

La sua prima domanda: “Il link è rotto? Non funziona?”

Si Anne, funziona. Ma non credo sarebbe dovuto essere pubblicato.

Le ho chiesto se avrebbe pubblicato lo stesso pezzo nella versione cartacea dell’Hollywood Reporter. Ha detto che non l’avrebbe mai fatto. Ma questo è un blog, e I blog sono un’altra cosa.

E qui siamo entrati nel cuore del problema: lei invidiava i blog. Da un certo punto di vista invidiava Aint’ It Cool News, perché era in grado di scrivere voci di corridoio e speculazioni senza porsi gli stessi problemi dell’Hollywood Reporter. I giornali da edicola hanno un contatto non scritto con i loro lettori per cui devono solo pubblicare fatti verificabili. I blog in giro per il mondo non ce l’hanno, e per questo motivo possono permettersi molto di più.

Abbiamo avuto una bella discussione sulla sua decisione di pubblicare il link, e sulla difficile distinzione tra il giornalismo con la G maiuscola e quello che succede sulla rete. Alla fine ha deciso di rimuovere il link.

Ma quello che non le ho detto, e che vi dico ora, è che credo che l’atto di pubblicare il link in sé sia stato incredibilmente poco professionale da parte sua. E’ ridicolo che abbia dovuto chiamarla perché accettasse di toglierlo.

Tornando al problema della professionalità: non c’è dubbio che lei sia una giornalista professionista a tutti gli effetti. E’ un direttore pagato in uno dei giornali più rispettati nel giro dell’industria cinematografica. Non può decidere di dire tutto ad un tratto che in questo contesto è “solo una blogger, non mi puoi giudicare con gli stessi standard”.

E questa è la tesi numero 3:

Non spetta a te decidere quando essere un professionista o no.

Forse il modo migliore per dimostrare questo è pensare a quando eravate a lezione di geometria al liceo. Ovvero l’anno scorso, per molti di voi. Ricordate che ci sono due tipi di dimostrazione? Ci sono le dimostrazioni dirette, dove si parte dal postulato e l’assioma per provare qualcosa, e poi c’è la dimostrazione indiretta. Per la dimostrazione indiretta si fa il ragionamento opposto al postulato, finché non si dimostra la sua illogicità.

Usiamo la dimostrazione indiretta.

Quindi diciamo che tu puoi decidere quando essere un professionista e quando puoi essere un non professionista. Seguiamo questa logica fino in fondo.

Quando posso scegliere di essere un professionista? Probabilmente quando stai facendo bene a lavoro. Quando stai lavorando qualcosa su cui ti senti a tuo agio, che ti fa sentire bene. E’ facile essere professionale quando tutti ti lodano.

Che cosa si guadagna quando ci si definisce professionisti? A volte si guadagna accesso. Se siete fotografi professionisti, potete avere accesso ad eventi chiusi agli appassionati. Potreste essere pagati. In quanto sceneggiatore professionista, vengo pagato piuttosto bene per scrivere dialoghi interessanti. Un attore è pagato molto di più per recitare i dialoghi interessanti che scrivo (ma quello è un altro argomento).

In quanto professionista, ricevi anche il rispetto dei tuoi colleghi. Ti puoi sedere al tavolo degli adulti, piuttosto che in quello dei bambini. In termini di soddisfazione personale, può essere molto importante.

Chiaramente ci sono un sacco di ragioni per voler essere considerati professionisti.

Quando potreste decidere di essere considerati dei dilettanti? Probabilmente nei momenti in cui state facendo schifo, che sia perché non avete idea di che state facendo, o perché non siete buoni a farlo. O quanto meno nel momento in cui la gente vi critica. Dite: “che vi aspettate? Sono solo un dilettante”.

Questo è quello che fa Aint’ It Cool News. Stanno usando il loro essere appassionati come scusa.

E’ come dire “non giudicatemi”.

E qui la dimostrazione indiretta crolla: La gente vi giudicherà sempre. Non avete nessun potere in proposito. Non potete controllare i criteri con cui sarete giudicati, o che criterio sia più importante.

L’unica cosa che potete controllare è il vostro lavoro. Perché il vostro lavoro, tutto il vostro lavoro, deve essere professionale.

E cosa intendo per professionale?

Tornando ai cinque punti per cui non ho un acronimo:

Presentazione: se la vostra scrittura è delirante, incoerente e sgrammaticata, la gente vi giudicherà per questo.

Accuratezza: se vi state sbagliando, quello è un problema. E non vale solo per il giornalismo. Se giungete a conclusioni che non sono sono supportate dai fatti, quello è un problema. Se state studiando la clonazione umana, potete passare dall’essere il più grande eroe della Corea del Sud ad essere il suo peggior nemico nel giro di una settimana. Credetemi, quel tizio non dirà “no, avete frainteso, sono un clonatore dilettante.”

Consistenza: la gente può contare su di voi? Sono sicuro che tutti in questa stanza hanno partecipato ad un progetto di gruppo. E c’è sempre quello che non fa la sua parte. Si presenta in ritardo. Non finisce di scrivere la sua parte. Evitate di diventare quel tizio. Dovete presentarvi in tempo ed essere pronti.

Responsabilità: vi prendete la responsabilità di quello che dite, e di quello che fate? È facile prendere posizioni forti. È più difficile viverle con coerenza.

Raggiungere gli standard della professione: quando tornate a casa per il ringraziamento, una volta che sedete nel tavolo degli adulti non potete tornare a quello dei bambini. Non puoi più lanciare il cibo, o smetteranno di invitarvi.

La mia tesi era: “non puoi decidere quando essere professionista, e quando sei un dilettante”. Possiamo renderlo più breve.

Tesi 3.01:

Non potete mai essere dilettanti.

Adesso molti di voi starà pensando minchia, troppa pressione. Quando mi laureo, quando sarò nel mondo reale, devo essere, cioè, professionale.

E io vi dico no. Questo È il mondo reale. Dovete essere professionali ora. Perché tutto quello che state scrivendo, che sia un compito di inglese o il vostro profilo su Facebook, porta il vostro nome. Vi rappresenta. E nell’era di Google, tutto quello che avete scritto, anche quel commento acido lasciato nel forum, è collegato a voi.

Per cui dovete chiedervi: tra un anno, tra cinque anni, come mi sentirò quando qualcuno mi chiederà di quella cosa che ho scritto?

In tutta onestà, sinceramente, non voglio sembrare il Signor Oppressione e Disperazione. Se volete scrivere 1500 parole sul vostro gatto sul vostro blog, fatelo senza problemi. Vi sto solo chiedendo, implorando, di correggere quello che scrivete: Mr. Fusa se lo merita. Rimboccate le vostre maniche virtuali e prendete sul serio anche le cose leggere.

Fatemi citare due esempi tratti dalla mia esperienza:

La prima cosa che io abbia mai scritto si chiamava Here and Now. Era una tragedia romantica ambientata a Boulder, Colorado. Era la classica prima sceneggiatura, dove ho provato ad infilare tutto quello che sapevo su tutto, perché avevo la sensazione che magari non avrei scritto un’altra sceneggiatura, per cui ho messo tutto in quella.

La sceneggiatura è venuta fuori bene, mi ha procurato il mio primo agente, e in seguito un lavoro scrivendo una sceneggiatura per qualcun altro.

Quando leggo quella sceneggiatura, oggi, mi vengono i brividi. Sono uno scrittore migliore oggi di quanto lo fossi ai tempi. Ma non mi vergogno di quella sceneggiatura perché è professionale. È ben presentata, non ci sono errori di battitura rilevanti. È accurata, almeno per quanto riguarda le emozioni descritte nella storia. È consistente: ci sono una manciata di modi per presentare una sceneggiatura, e finché si sceglie uno e lo si segue fino alla fine non si sbaglia. Mi sento ancora responsabile per la sceneggiatura. Non mando più quella sceneggiatura come dimostrazione del mio lavoro, ma se qualcuno l’ha letta sono felice di parlare delle scelte che ho fatto.

E infine, e questa è la cosa più importante: la sceneggiatura ha raggiunto gli standard della professione. Per quanto fossi uno sceneggiatore esordiente, non stavo scrivendo per altri sceneggiatori esordienti. Stavo scrivendo come se fossi uno sceneggiatore professionista, e volevo che gli altri mi leggessero allo stesso modo.

Secondo esempio: al momento mi occupo di un sito internet, praticamente un blog sulla sceneggiatura. Il sottotitolo del progetto è “una tonnellata di informazioni utili sullo sceneggiare”, e spero sia veritiero. Ho creato il sito perché quando ero un aspirante sceneggiatore – notate che ho usate “aspirante”, non “dilettante” – era molto difficile trovare buone informazioni sulle sceneggiature e su come scriverle.

Ho cominciato a scrivere una rubrica settimanale di domande e risposte sull’Internet Movie Database, e ho infine usato queste rubriche come base del sito.

Aggiorno il sito più o meno due volte a settimana, e lo prendo piuttosto sul serio. Non è il mio lavoro; non vengo pagato per farlo; non ho neanche la colonna di Google ad nel sito. Ma sono molto professionale nel sito, in tutti e cinque i sensi che considero facciano un professionista. Voglio che abbia un bell’aspetto. Controllo che quello che scrivo sia corretto. Controllo che i link che pubblico funzionino. Cerco di essere sicuro di dare consigli utili settimana dopo settimana. E per quanto riguarda il rispetto degli standard dei miei pari, non controllo siti di altri sceneggiatori, ma i siti più utili che si dedicano ad altri argomenti. Cerco di attenermi a quegli standard.

E lo faccio perché ci metto il mio nome. Credo che sia importante pensare al proprio nome come al proprio marchio. Così come la Walt Disney Corporation non vuole che Topolino venga rappresentato con un’accetta insanguinata nella sua mano bianca e pacioccosa, io non voglio che il mio nome venga associato a della cattiva scrittura poco professionale.

Tutto quello che avete è il vostro lavoro. Quindi date il meglio di voi stessi. Sempre e comunque.

Per chiudere, voglio chiarire che le mie critiche ad Aint’ It Cool News, o Us Weekly o ai blog di bassa lega non vogliono essere scoraggianti. Stiamo vivendo uno dei momenti più elettrizzanti della storia dei media. Le barriere per entrare nel discorso  pubblico non sono mai state così basse. Potete girare un cortometraggio con una videocamera da 500 dollari, pubblicarlo su Youtube, e diventare un successo mondiale il giorno dopo. Tramite un blog avete la possibilità di rispondere ai media come mai è successo prima, e i vostri lettori possono rispondervi.

Credo che il periodo più vicino a quello che stiamo vivendo sia l’inizio degli anni ‘90, quando abbiamo avuto le prime stampanti laser. Ero un designer grafico, ed ero in paradiso. Ma ci possiamo ricordare tutti quello che è successo, no? Tutto ad un tratto sono spuntate fuori un sacco di notiziari orribili. E abbiamo imparato una lezione dolorosa: solo perché puoi creare un notiziario con 50 font in copertina, non vuol dire che sia il caso di farlo.

Quello che vi chiedo, quello che vi supplico di fare, se potete leggere tra le righe, è di affrontare questi nuovi strumenti da professionisti, non da dilettanti. Al contrario di quell’orribile notiziario, che è stato riciclato, il vostro blog sarà disponibile per sempre. Per sempre. Gli storici lo leggeranno e si chiederanno, “Cristo. Ma non avevano il correttore automatico?”

A prescindere dalla carriera che decidiate di intraprendere, sarete scrittori per il resto della vostra vita. Promettete a voi stessi, stanotte, che sarete per sempre professionisti.

Joss Whedon is one of the very few real auteur in television. Like Aaron Sorkin and Judd Apatow, his style is immediately recognizable, and his fans are many and passionate. But he’s not as lucky with ratings. Dollhouse, his new TV show, seemed to be doomed even before it aired. Rumors about conflicts between the creative team and the network have been around for quite some time before the first episode hit TVs.  Its concept its not exactly easy to pitch to audiences: the series revolves around a secret corporation that deals in erasing people’s brain to use them as “dolls”, blank people that can be programmed to do practically any task a rich client wants done.

Storytelling works when it starts small and goes big, and until now Whedon made a point of this rule. We need to be pulled into a world we can relate with, and we will be willing to go almost anywhere a good story brings us. This is the case with both Buffy and Angel, two shows with a very catchy premise that eventually ventured territories no one could have had anticipated when the show was first aired. Whedon is good at building things and make them move, evolve, change.  Even in Dr. Horrible’s Singalong Blog he managed to defy the viewer’s expectations with a plot twist that was both surprising and coherent with the story (albeit a little bit too abrupt, maybe). It worked because we fell in love with the main characters in the first three minutes of the show.

In Dollhouse there is no main character. Or better, there are several, but after eight episodes we don’t know any of them. The dolls are, well, dolls. We catch glimpses of their true selves, but we can’t tell who they really are. The people working in the Dollhouse are mysterious, and it’s hard to tell if we should somehow care for them or just see them as villains. The FBI agent is the only consistent character in the show, but it’s very hard to understand the reason why he’s so obsessed about the Dollhouse. In The X-Files we got to know the reason behind Mulder’s obsession with paranormal and consiracies right at the beginning of the show. We wouldn’t have cared for him as much if we didn’t know about his sister being kidnapped by aliens.

The show has a sleek, glossy look  that works with the doll concept, but the pacing of the episodes, the directing and the editing feels very straightforward, maybe too much so. We are fascinated by shows like Carnivale and The Shield because they marry an unconventional, even unpleasant premise and story with a style that seems to fit perfectly with the concept. Dollhouse seems disconnected.

I really hope that the show will be confirmed for a second season, I think that the premise has the potential to explore some interesting issues. Right now, what seems to be missing is any real emotion, something Whedon is usually excellent at. It’s telling that the dolls are programmed when wires go in their head. Their heart is unaffected, it’s missing, and so it’s the show’s.

Questo post di Luca Sofri mi ha fatto tornare in mente molte sensazioni che non mi abbandonano nonostante io non viva più in Italia. Informandomi ogni giorno sui fatti che muovono il mio paese non posso fare a meno di provare sensazioni molto simili. da quando a vivo all’estero mi sembra sempre più evidente che il problema principale dell’Italia sia talmente ovvio da essere invisibile, il tipico elefante bianco.

L’Italia non è un paese laico. Detto così pare un’ovvietà, visto l’influenza del Vaticano nella vita quotidiana nel paese, ma se il problema fosse solo lì sarebbe tutto più facile. Oltre ai molti che vivono sotto l’influenza del cattolicesimo, in Italia altrettanti hanno un rapporto religioso con l’idea del comunismo. Dico “idea del comunismo” invece che “comunismo” perché in pochi si dichiarerebbero comunisti oggi, ma nonostante questo la forza con cui il pensiero marxista domina i ragionamenti intellettuali nel paese è ancora straordinaria, e si estende anche alla mia generazione, ai ventenni, per i quali troppo spesso criticare apertamente il concetto di “comunismo” pare una bestemmia. E’ una paura quasi irrazionale, simile a quella che si legge negli occhi di un religioso quando sente insultare la sua divinità. 

Queste due chiese danno grandissimo valore all’essere morigerati, mettono davanti il bene di tutti al bene individuale, e celebrano il sacrificio. Celebrano il restare in vita, non vivere. Avere successo non è educato se non è vissuto con una certa quantità di senso di colpa, e deve essere accompagnato da una sana dose di frasi di circostanza che dimostrino la consapevolezza che ci sia gente che soffre e che celebrare i propri risultati in maniera troppo aperta non è educato. Il discorso di Pacino in Ogni Maledetta Domenica non funzionerebbe per questo: celebra andare avanti, combattendo, senza mai scusarsi. Un concetto assurdo nelle due chiese, le quali correnti di pensiero rendono molto facile mettere da parte le proprie responsabilità: fino a che si fa qualcosa per il collettivo, tutto va bene, la coscienza è a posto. Se poi le cose vanno male è colpa del collettivo. Così che una delle più inquietanti regole non scritte in Italia si possa riassumere con il concetto di “se lo fanno tutti va bene, anche se è sbagliato”.

Sofri dice quindi che un buon motto per l’Italia sarebbe “non siamo mai stati un grande paese, ma cominciamo ad esserlo”. Corretto, giusto, ma non credo che funzionerebbe, perché permette a tutti gli italiani di nascondere il loro ruolo dietro ad un “sistema paese” al quale è troppo facile dare la colpa dei propri fallimenti. Serve una presa di responsabilità individuale. Una delle letture più belle e potenti che abbia fatto nel mio paese è “Più Mondi” di Franco Bolelli, che probabilmente avranno letto in cinque. Ma il pensiero di Bolelli, energetico e ostinatamente puntato in avanti, è uno dei motivi per cui ho ancora fiducia nell’Italia. Bolelli cita una frase di Tom Robbins: “Stanchi di aspettare che il mondo migliori, vivere come se quel giorno fosse già qui”. ecco, questo dovrebbe essere inciso sulla costituzione italiana. E’ necessario capire che far parte di una collettività vuol dire prima di tutto nutrire sé stessi senza scuse, e prendere in mano il proprio destino senza lamentarsi del piove governo ladro. Dare forza alla collettività è impossibile se non si dà prima forza a sé stessi.

For a while now I’ve been noticing an interesting trend: game journalism, often stagnating in its written incarnation due to oversaturation of content and an excessive reliance on formula and votes, is now living a second life through audio and video podcasts. The same people writing in some of the most important media outlets in the world, once freed from the restraints of the review/preview formula, give some of the most interesting (and fun) insight on games that I’ve seen in years. So, when I heard the terribile news of the UGO/EGM buyout, I was definitely saddened by the news of an historical magazine being shut down for good, but I was even more bummed out because that meant the end for the amazing podcast produced by the 1Up team: 1Up Yours, 1Up FM., and the 1Up Show. I thought my gaming info would be much poorer due to the layoff of the talented people that made these show a reality, but it seems that, luckly, I was wrong.

After Rebel FM, now at its third episode, the spiritual successor of both 1Up Yours and 1Up Fm, the cast and crew of the 1Up Show are back with Co-op, a new video podcast whose goal is to pick up from where the 1Up Show left. The first episode is both melanchonic and inspiring: the whole crew is back, and while the intro shows the bulk of the team still recuperating from the massive layoff, we can see that they are very much up for sharing their insight into the best games of the past year with some cool choices (I got reminded that I need to pick up Dead Space). But what is most inspiring is the quality of the overall product and just how fast the team managed to recover from losing the support of a big company. Kudos, if this is a preview of more things to come, I’m pretty psyched. 

The team is still considering what formula to adopt to turn this into a regular show: the podcast is not on iTunes yet because there is a chance that it will become a paid subscription show. Leaving all doors open is the best option right now, but the subscription option is one that seems quite risky to me: first off, that would make the show unavailable to many people outside US (I use the Italian store, and there is almost no paid video content on it, but I can download all video podcasts), and even if the bulk of their audience would come from the States, cutting off part of the potential viewership seems risky to me, it would encourage ripping, sharing and other illegal stuff that could harm revenue. I think the best thing those guys could try and do is to follow the Totally Rad Show/Geekbrief TV formula, free podcasts with sponsor support, possibly with some backing by a bigger website. But the problem is that the 1Up Show looked like a much more ambitious production, with more people involved compared to these two show: I don’t know if making it profitable can be that easy.

Anyways, the show rocks, and I really hope to see much more from these guys, soon. Subscribe to their show on Youtube, and good luck to the team!

2008 was a good year for movies. It’s interesting that most critics seem to feel that it was not as interesting as 2007, for the lack of big masterpieces like There Will Be Blood or No Country For Old ean. Thing is, we had masterpieces this year, but they were “genre” movies. But more on that later. I’ve coupled most of the movies to make things snappier.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall / Tropic Thunder

The last few years have been great for comedies, and Judd Apatow is the man behind this great streak of funny, poignant and always interesing movies. Forgetting Sarah Marshall is amazingly funny and very, very well done, another proof that Apatow’s movies are consistently good without being at all formulaic, probably because he really trusts his protegees, like Jason Segel this time. Tropic Thunder, though, goes beyond that, and shows Ben Stiller at his best in a movie that puts him back at Zoolander heights. Very few authors can marry extreme intelligence with absolute idiocy like this man. Kudos.

Il Divo / Paranoid Park

Style is a double edged sword. I always felt that Paolo Sorrentino’s hyper stylized direction was jarring in the context of his previous movies, especially in L’amico di Famiglia. But Giulio Andreotti’s absurd story is a perfect match for his visual bravura, and Il Divo is the most interesting italian movie in years. On the other hand, I always liked Gus Van Sant’s experiments, and Paranoid Park marries his will to explore  with a great story and gorgeous cinematography from the world’s greatest DP, Christopher Doyle. It’s a great movie, bleak and inspiring at the same time.

Slumdog Millionaire

I have conflicting feelings about this movie: some parts feel too forced and unnecessarily glossy, there’s something about its structure that feels kind of fake, as if you could see the strings pulling all the dramatic moment in a obvious, jarring way. But I love the way this movie acknowledges its own escapist nature in the ending, and some of the best moments in this movie are some of the best moments in movies all year. It’s an amazing directorial achievement.

Hancock / Speed Racer

Hancock, as flawed as it may be, it’s one of the few movies about superpowers (which should be considered a different genre from superhero movies) that matches in ambition Joss Whedon’s work in the genre. The ending, considered by many as incoherent and abrupt, is one of the most interesting narrative twists of the year. And it works, changing shifts from comedy to fantasy drama with great skill. And all the actors are great on it. But yes, it’s weird. But not nearly as much as Speed Racer, just another proof that the Wachowski Brothers are among the very few artists who work with cinema without conceding anything to conventions. It’s as if each shot of the movie is built to create new words in the cinematic vocabulary. I have the feeling this two movies, in the long run, will have a bigger impact than most people expect. 

The Mist

I’ve written at great lengths l about the reasons why this movie rocks. I was quite surprised to find a better horror movie this year in Let the Right One In, but The Mist is more of a straight horror movie, and it’s absolutely brilliant.

Wall-E / Christmas On Mars

Sci-Fi is too often a cold, distant affair, but Pixar has managed to build an amazing movie about robots with no words, no humans, and a bug. This would be the first part of Wall-E: I have more problems with the second part than most people, but the greatness of what works makes up for whatever it’s not working. The Flaming Lips’ movie is an example of a very different approach: hyper low budget, basically a home movie, it works for the absolute honesty that comes out of every shot, and has some astoundingly great scenes. 2001: a Space Odyssey is one of my favourite movies of all time, I feel that both movies would make Kubrick proud.

The Dark Knight - Let The Right on In

I need to quote Joss Whedon here:

science fiction really gives you the opportunity to talk about the human condition in a very specific way. In a way that can touch everybody, because everybody can remove themselves just enough to relate to everybody. If you’re doing something about clam-diggers or a rap group or something that’s very now, you can still say beautiful things about the human condition, but in science fiction it’s be as you wanna be. What’s interesting to me, I never thought of this before, but I’ve been having this conversation for years: Hamlet is a ghost story. Interesting to me about this: Hamlet was a ghost story when there was no stigma about being a ghost story. That was partially because people believed in ghosts, but also they realized that there was a fantastic structure to this. The very first plays were completely mythic: Everyman, Death, you know, and then there was this bend toward realism, which is just a trend. It’s a fad. Those are the people, the ones who say: High-brow drama can’t have any fantastical elements, those are the people who are completely dated, completely not understanding history, making things new, coming full circle. And that’s something I’ve just been realizing, and that’s really fun in an interview. But to me, will always want to write like that.

I feel that what Whedon says applies perfectly to both The Dark Knight and Let the Right One In. Those are fantastic stories, some of the best of the decade, and have amazing depth and scope. They don’t transcend genre, they make a point for genres being completely useless for anything but browsing a catalogue.

P.S.: the picture on top of this post pays homage to a great show that is no more.

2) The art world works in weird and sometimes completely nonsensical ways, and Kitano’s approach to it is refreshing and feels completely true. It’s the story of a world that continually needs to validate itself in order to exist, and the parable told by this movie is a perfect metaphor of the craziness of the whole idea of “high art” versus “pop art”. It’s also a tale about love of art bordering on obsession, and the body count at the end of the movie, kind of close to First Blood’s, is telling on how much Kitano seems to think this obsession can be dangerous.

3) This movie closes a trilogy were Kitano seems to unleash his inner comedian in a way that will very much please fans of his Takeshi’s Castle show or the amazing anime/manga series Excel Saga. This movie’s humor is tipically Japanese, and it’s an acquired taste for anyone outside the country. It’s very fun and understandable for young Italians, because we grew up on a steady diet of animes and mangas; and for some reason seems to resonate a lot with Czech audiences, who also love Monthy Python.

The Flaming Lips are all that Christmas should be and their shows are a gigantic, spectacular tribute to joy. Their movie is finally out, and it’s the best way to celebrate the holidays this year.

The rise of the Internet and the decline is newspapers and magazines sales have sent most of the newspapers’ editors in a state of complete panic. They cut jobs and try any gimmick  trying to win a fight they already lost. In a very near future, print will exist in a small niche, for speciality stuff, for deluxe magazines. Devices like the Amazon Kindle will make sure that people will have their news fix on the go. There will be more content than before, not less. Movie criticisms is not going to die, but it’s going to change radically.

The amount of commentary on anything at all is at an all-time high. And if it’s always refreshing to read some prominent movie critic, it’s also true that the majority of professional critics are not more skilled or interesting to read than some of the top reviewers on Amazon.com. This doesn’t mean that there is no difference between professional critics and amateurs, but the gap is closing: amateurs can get an extraordinary amount of feedback from strangers, tweak their style, develop their tastes, and do so as part of a community.

We will have an overabundance of thoughtful movie criticism. The real problem is that most people won’t see it because they will need to look for it in order to find it: websites will arguably be more specialized than newspaper, and it will be probably more difficult for someone who’s not interested in the subject to accidentally discover a review of an obscure movie.

Most of these “new critics” won’t be paid for their writing, or at least won’t be paid enough to make a living out of this job alone. This means we will have less people able to check out more than a couple of festivals or premieres, and this could limit their knowledge of what’s going on in the movie world. But the movie world is changing: digital delivery is more and more of a reality, and we are probably heading to a new era were indie movies will be available to the general public on the opening day through means other than theatrical distribution. Critics could receive advance, copy protected copies of movies to review before their release date.

It’s significant that a name of Ebert’s calibre is writing this kind of elegy, because what we will probably not see anymore is a critic of his importance and impact on popular culture. Ebert will probably be one of the last critics of his kind (last one in Italy: Morando Morandini, likely), the future will likely not see “star critics” as much as a network of critics that, together, will manage to give a broad view of what’s going on. They will have to cooperate, share, confront their ideas more often. It’s going to be diverse, and global. It’s probably not going to be a tragedy. 

The whole movie business is changing, and celebrity gossip alone is not killing criticism. Now that critics have lost their privileged speaker podium, is time to get creative in order to affect popular culture again. It won’t be easy, but it could be interesting.
